Description

Introduction Stress has been defined as a reaction to a perceived imbalance between environmental demands and one's ability to deal with such demands (Lazarus & Launier, 1978; Veno & Davidson, 1978; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Biologically, this reaction is an activation of neurobiological systems in an attempt to preserve allostasis, or a balanced state in the body (Gunnar & Quevedo, 2007; Swearingen & Cohen, 1985; Pareek, 1997). Although certain "optimal" levels of stress have been found to be beneficial, enhancing achievement and success (Selye, 1956), ongoing and unmanaged stress may increase an individual's risk for physical, emotional, mental, and behavioral problems (Gunnar & Quevedo, 2007; Swearingen & Cohen, 1985; Pareek, 1997).
